It has taken many years for Hackney Council to secure the funding for the major redevelopment that is now happening in the park.
Work on site began in January 2010 and by the end of 2011 £9 million pounds of Heritage Lottery Fund and Hackney Council money will have been spent on restoring the park and the house. This includes creating a new playground and wheels park, reinstating part of the new river which was filled in many years ago, restoring the house and opening it to the public, creating a new cafe, improving the animal enclosures, dredging the ponds, new planting, new bridges and gates.
Throughout the project the User Group has been closely involved, encouraging the Council to consult at every stage, attending meetings and highlighting the concerns of park users. As the work is completed and different parts of the park come back into public use we will continue to monitor developments and make sure that users continue to be consulted and involved.
We are represented on the park’s Stakeholder Forum and on the Council’s Project Board.
We are now reaching a very exciting stage of the project focussing less on the physical environment and starting to think about how the park and house will be used in the future.
This will include education work in the newly restored bowls’ pavilion, a new café and the opening up of all the parts of the house which have previously been inaccessible to local people.
A priority for the User Group will be to make sure that the house and park are well-run and well-managed into the future so that we can all benefit from the huge investment in our park.
