Clissold Park User Group (CPUG)

The Clissold Park User Group (CPUG) is a local community group for the people of Stoke Newington in Hackney who appreciate and love their local park.

The group has been campaigning locally for over 20 years and seeks to represent the interests of everyone who uses this very popular park: the walkers, joggers, cyclists, nature lovers, families and free spirits who value the opportunity to enjoy time outdoors in this beautiful and historic space.

A bright new House and park
On the 3rd of January 2012 the cafe in the newly restored eighteenth century Mansion House in the park re-opened after being closed for exactly two years. This marks the culmination of an ambitious project costing £9 million to revitalise the park and bring the House back into public use.

As well as the restored house, we now have a new playground, a new wheels park and a new education centre on the old bowling green. The landscaping has been restored, the ponds have been dredged and cleaned and the New River, which had been filled in, has been partially reinstated with two new bridges.

We are grateful to Hackney Council for partially funding and for managing this project and for the extent to which they have listened to us and responded to us over the last few years. We are also grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery for their funding and support.

The new Cafe
In response to concerns raised by park users about various aspects of the Cafe and House at our meetings (and more widely) we have been working with the Council to help bring about some changes. Over the course of the next few months as the weather improves and the park becomes busier, we expect that there will be further changes to the Cafe service and we will continue to press for user views to be taken on board.
Please let us know how you feel about these changes and what more you would like to see.

Looking to the Future
Apart from the Cafe and House, there are many other important elements of the project yet to be developed such as the education and heritage programming and the launch of a new volunteering programme. We are also keen to refocus on the ecology of the park – the trees, the plants and the wildlife.

This is a very exciting time for us with a number of events coming up including the Olympic Torch event on Saturday 21 July 2012 - more on this in our Park events section. We will be running some events ourselves and contributing to others and we have now started to fundraise for these.
